Growing the Agriculture Industry Now

An initiative to capitalize agriculture and related businesses that are adopting new technologies, diversifying or expanding in the Finger Lakes Region

The Finger Lakes (FL) Region includes Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, Wyoming, and Yates Counties.  The Region contains three of the top five and five of the top ten agricultural counties in New York State.  It truly is the “Bread Basket” of New York State. The diversity of the Region’s agricultural industry is considerable with economic strength in such sectors as dairy, yogurt, apples, stone fruit, cash crops, grapes, wineries and more.   Farms and support businesses continually innovate, expand and diversify in order to thrive.  The most recent Census of Agriculture (2012) indicates that farm-gate sales in the region totaled $1.6 billion, comprising 30% of the statewide farm sales, with food processing and other support businesses as additional multipliers.  A 2012 study by Cornell (Schmit&Bills EB2012-11) estimated the region’s agriculture and food system output to be $9.2 billion or about 9.3% of the total regional economy.  This same study indicated that about 79,000 people or 11.5% of the total employment in the Finger Lakes Region are employed in the agriculture and food system sectors.
